Believers Bail Out (BBO) is a community-led effort to bail out Muslims in pretrial incarceration and ICE custody. Based in Chicago, home to the largest single-site jail in the United States, Believers Bail Out supports efforts to abolish money bail and to raise awareness within Muslim communities on the injustices of the bail bond system, immigration bonds, and the broader prison-industrial complex of which they form part. Now hiring full-time Communications Manager and Strategist who can effectively convey the complexity, nuance, and sensitivity of the carceral system and BBO’s work to a wide, broad-based audience online and offline.  Our volunteer-run abolitionist collective is hiring as soon as possible to incorporate full-time staff in growing and advancing the community, networks, message, and impact of BBO’s work of confronting the anti-Black and anti-Muslim racism of the prison industrial complex. Again, we are working to center the voices and experiences of those impacted by incarceration, and hiring is prioritized as such.

 

Responsibilities

  • Creatively convey our work, abolitionist vision, and anti-racist values with a wide audience online and offline
  • Develop annual social media strategies with quarterly Key Performance Indicators on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, deploying a racial impact analysis
  • Engage non-digital communication platforms e.g. community newsletters and newspapers circulated within local jails and prisons
  • Base-build across generations, socioeconomic status, and access to the Internet, cultivating relationships with those affected by incarceration in particular
  • Help design and implement a cohesive digital fundraising campaign annually during Ramadan
  • Create and curate content across online and offline platforms in collaboration with our post-release support team, fundraising team, and education team
  • Gather and analyze data to measure and report on communication strategies across platforms, and adjust accordingly.
  • Update basic information on the organization’s website
  • Solicit media coverage and coordinate interview requests
  • Train and Coordinate BBO volunteers to participate in BBO social media and campaigns

Location

Flexible, with the availability to meet in Chicago during BBO retreats

Salary + Benefits 

  • Salary of $55,000 – $70,000 per year depending on experience

Essential Skills

  • A deep understanding of the prison industrial complex and the mutually reinforcing web of relationships between incarceration, electronic monitoring, bail, police budgets, borders and surveillance, etc.
  • Strong understanding of Islamic principles as they relate to prison abolition, incarceration, and structural anti-Blackness and anti-Muslim racism
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, collaboratively and intersectionally with Black, immigrant, and minority Muslim communities.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in communications and/or social media strategy
  • Creative-minded with a strong interest in movement building, social justice, and Islam
  • Ability to work independently and seek support and guidance when needed
  • Very strong preference for candidates with first-hand experience within the carceral system (e.g., formerly incarcerated, family/relatives incarcerated, immigration detention, etc)
  • Strong preference for candidates with graphic design experience
  • Strong preference for candidates with videography and video editing experience
  • Strong preference for candidates with experience in WordPress
